Mary Ann Moore (1841-after 1910): her husband and children

Mary Ann Moore, the second child of Samuel & Thursa (Hardin) Moore was born about 1841 in Floyd County, Kentucky;[1] She lived at lived at home with her parents until 30 Jan 1859,[2] when she married Andrew Jackson Kelley-Mullins(ens) in Floyd County.  Andrew Jackson was the son of James P Kelley-Mullens(ins) and Dorcas Mullins(ens); he was born about 1839 in Kentucky.[3] He died of pneumonia on 5 December 1921 in Curlew, Oneida County, Idaho and is buried in Snowville, Utah.[4]

As a young married couple, Andrew Jackson & Mary Ann lived in Floyd County, Kentucky in 1860[5] with their first child, Nancy, who was aptly named after both a younger sibling of Mary Ann and Andrew Jackson. The couple carried the surname Kelley during this census.  Their residence was located just next door to Andrew Jackson's father, “James P. Kelly,” five households away from Mary Ann's maternal grandfather, John Hardin, and eight households away from Mary Ann's parents.  According to land records, Mary Ann’s and Andrew Jackson’s parents owned land on Wolf Creek and Meathouse respectively.[6],[7] Since the census was taken along a route, one can estimate that Andrew Jackson and Mary Ann lived in that geographic vicinity between McClure & the Head of Meathouse School (see map) in then-Floyd County, present-day Martin County, Kentucky.

In 1869, “Jackson Mullins” acquired 200 acres of land on Trace Fork of Big Creek in Logan County, West Virginia from Rilen (sic) Baisden.[8]  In the 1870 census, Jackson and Mary Ann confirmed the surname swap from “Kelley” to Mullins(ens) when they were recorded again carrying their new name in the Chapmanville district of Logan County, West Virginia.[9]  This residential location is consistent with Jackson’s land purchase on Trace Fork of Big Creek in 1869.

In 1880, AJ and Mary Mullins sold their 200 acres to Elender (sic) Perry;[10] in the same year, the couple was recorded in the Washington District of Boone County, West Virginia.[11]  The new residence was a short distance from their former residence. The Washington District in Boone County formed an eastern border to the Chapmanville District in Logan County.  No land records were found for Andrew Jackson and Mary in Boone County, WV.

In 1890, AJ & Mary returned to Logan County and made another attempt at land ownership through a purchase of 66 acres on the north fork of Big Creek.[12]  This endeavor was short-lived as they sold the land to William J. Berry the following year.[13]  This was the last record located of AJ and Mary Ann as a couple.

The last record of Mary Ann was found in the 1900 census in Boone County, West Virginia.[14]  She and her youngest daughter, Nettie, age 13, were in the household of her oldest daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Jane & Burwell Chapman.  She continued to carry the surname Mullins and listed her marital status as married for a duration of 44 years (not widowed or divorced).  No death record has yet been located for her under the name Mary Mullins; no additional marriage records have been located.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ANDREW JACKSON MULLINS?

DOUBLE WIVES

Sometime between 1891 and 1894, Andrew Jackson and Mary Ann separated.[15],[16]  Given Mary Ann’s reported marital status in the 1900 census,[17] it is unlikely that they divorced; a search of court records in Boone County produced negative results and Logan County, West Virginia court records have not yet been searched.

Where was Andrew Jackson Mullins?  In 1900, he was recorded on the opposite side of the state in Glade, Webster County with a new “wife” named Jinnie, age 46.[18]   Although he and Jinnie reported being husband and wife in both the 1900 and 1910 census listings in Webster County,[19],[20] no official marriage record has been located for them in the state of West Virginia.   In the 1900 census, they had one daughter born in May 1896[21] and claim to have been married for 30 years.

DOUBLE LIVES

In the absence of a divorce record from Mary Ann and the revelation of a new wife in 1900, one wonders about the nature of his separation from Mary and his character and reputation in his former and new residence.  No generation has been exempt from some form of social media. Our forebears were often chronicled in short highlights in the local newspaper.  In this case, a glimpse of the profile Andrew Jackson Mullins built for himself in his new community was highlighted in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph:

Screen Shot 2017-09-10 at 10.06.26 PM.png

Let’s dissect the article.  It is true that he fathered twelve children, but he didn’t raise them to adulthood.  At the time of the birth of his child with Jinnie, he had four children under the age of 18 and five still living at home with Mary Ann in Logan County with no father.

Did he give them all a piece of land, a horse and a cow?  Andrew Jackson only acquired 266 acres in Logan County during his marriage with Mary Ann and none was deeded to his children.[22],[23]

In 1894, Edward B. Lilly, who was likely a relative of George Lilly—Andrew Jackson & Mary Ann’s son-in-law (husband of Louisa Belle), deeded 100 acres on the Guyandotte River in Logan County to the five children whom Andrew Jackson abandoned when he left Mary Ann without legal proceedings.  In 1900, the five children relinquished control of the land to J. S. Miller, who was appointed Special Commissioner, to sell the land to pay debts of the family.  In 1903, the sale was completed.[24]

On 27 August 1902, Andrew Jackson’s and Mary Ann’s youngest, Nettie, daughter left home and married at age 16.[25]

In 1903, Andrew Jackson’s positive profile piece appeared in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.  Were all of his children adults at the time of the printing?  Yes, but they were not grown when he left them and resettled in Glade, Webster County.  Did all of his children have a piece of land?  At the time of the story, they were all grown and had homes to live in, but no record has been located in Logan or Boone County of any property deeded to them by their father.

As a last entry in his double life, by 1920, he and “Jennie” had moved to Curlew, Oneida County, Idaho.[26]  No death record has yet been located for Jennie, but Andrew’s death came on 5 December 1921 from “senile pneumonia” in Oneida County, a border county of Box Elder County, Utah.  Andrew Jackson was buried in the Snowville Cemetery, Box Elder County, Utah on 7 December 1921.[27]

DOUBLE SURNAMES

In addition to the double life Andrew Jackson was living with a second wife, the issue of surname swapping between Kelley and Mullens came to the forefront in the Kentucky Court of Appeals.  In August 1906, Andrew Jackson and his brothers sold their interest in their deceased father's 125 acres of land on Maynard Fork of Wolf Creek in Martin, Kentucky, United States to Hart Newsome, either unwittingly or cunningly; their father had already sold the land in 1880 or 1881 to Thomas P. Riffe. After the land passed hands several times via two separate originators, the title required resolution by the Kentucky Court of Appeals in a case entitled “Mullens, et. al. versus McCoy” in 1916.[28]

The matter of surname swapping between Kelly and Mullens(ins) is probably best discussed in a separate blog on Andrew Jackson’s ancestry, but to briefly satisfy curiosity here, Andrew Jackson’s paternal grandparents were mostly likely John Kelley and Dorcas Mullins (not to be confused with Andrew Jackson’s mother, Dorcas Mullins).  John Kelley divorced Dorcas Mullins on 16 November 1817 in Floyd County, Kentucky[29] and Andrew Jackson’s father, James, was born in 1818.  A more thorough study should be undertaken on the paternity of James, Andrew Jackson’s father, but this precursory explanation should suffice here.

Andrew Jackson Kelley Mullins and Mary Ann Moore had the following children:

                      i.  Nancy Jane Mullins, born ca. Oct 1859, Floyd, Kentucky;[30] married Poindexter Bradbury, 3 Feb 1912, Logan, West Virginia[31]; married Burwell D Chapman, 2 Jun 1876, Boone, West Virginia;[32] died bet 1920 and 1927.[33],[34]

ii.  James P Mullins, born 22 Jul 1861, Floyd County, Kentucky;[35] married Eliza Thomas, 18 Jun 1879, Logan, West Virginia;[36] died 15 Sep 1933, Boone, West Virginia.[37]

iii.  Spencer Mullins was born in 1863 in Kentucky.[38]  Last record is the 1880 census with his parents in Boone County, West Virginia.[39]

iv.  Tamsy Mullins, born ca. 1865, Kentucky;[40] married Monteville McNeely, 7 Feb 1881, Boone, West Virginia.[41] Last record of her is the 1940 census in Hamilton Township, Ohio, with her husband.[42]

                     v.  John H Mullins, claimed official birthdate of 15 May 1869, Kentucky, but was 2 years old in the 1870 census;[43],[44] married Eliza Barrette Lucas, 16 Jun 1888, Logan, West Virginia;[45]died 2 Apr 1946, Danville, Boone, West Virginia.[46]

vi.  Andrew Jackson Mullins, born ca. 1872, Kentucky according to 1880 census (likely Logan County, West Virginia);[47] married Laura Adkins, ca. 1890;[48] died 25 Sep 1924, Cabell, West Virginia.[49]

vii.  Granville Mullins, born ca. Feb 1873, Kentucky according to 1880 census (likely Logan County, West Virginia);[50] married Minnie Workman, ca. 1894.[51] Last record of Granville was divorce record from Minnie on 16 July 1925.[52]

viii.  Louisa Belle Mullins, born 26 May 1875, Logan, Logan County, West Virginia;[53] married George Lilly, 27 Nov 1892, Boone, West Virginia;[54] married John B Hager, 1911, Kanawha, West Virginia;[55] died 13 Apr 1946, Uneeda, Boone, West Virginia.[56]

ix.  William Henry Mullins, born 25 Jan 1878, Logan County, West Virginia;[57] married Rachel Louise Slone, ca. 1913 based on age of oldest daughter in 1920 census;[58] died 12 Feb 1943, Madison, Boone, West Virginia.[59]

                     x.  Mont Mullins, born May 1880, West Virginia according to 1900 census, but he wasn’t born yet in the June 1880 census, so birth was after June 1880;[60],[61] married Margarett Thomas, 19 Oct 1900, Boone County, West Virginia;[62] married Julia Lawson, 22 Jan 1920, Logan County, West Virginia;[63] died 25 Oct 1957, Godby, Logan, West Virginia.[64]

xi.  Dock Vinson Kelley Mullins, born 22 Jun 1884, West Virginia;[65] married Elsie Ellen Perdue, 22 May 1960, Danville, Boone, West Virginia;[66] married Laura E , ca. 1901;[67] died 15 Dec 1966.[68]

xii.  Nettie Mullins, born 10 Mar 1886, Boone, West Virginia;[69] married George F Workman, 27 Aug 1902, Logan, West Virginia.[70]  Last record of Nettie is the 1940 census with her husband in Lincoln County, West Virginia.[71]
