1. Tamsey Jane Moore, the first child of Samuel and Thursa (Hardin) Moore, was born on 28 Feb 1839 in Lawrence County, Kentucky [1] and died on 10 October 1932 at the age of 93 in Martin County, Kentucky [2]. She married William Cassady on 22 March 1855, in a ceremony performed by Isaac Goble in Floyd County, Kentucky.[3] William was born about July 1836 in Kentucky.[4] His parents were Benjamin Cassaday and Juliet Ann Helvey.[5] William preceded Tamsey in death on 19 November 1923 in Martin County, Kentucky; he was 87 years old.[6]
William and Tamsey began their early years together in Johnson County, Kentucky where they were recorded in the 1860 and 1870 US census listings.[7,8] To be more precise, they resided in the Rockcastle Precinct in 1870. In a reflection of the establishment of Martin County in 1870 and the pursuant adjustments to county lines, William & Tamsey were recorded in Martin County in 1880; it is unlikely that they moved, rather the county lines shifted around them.[9] Over the years, William made a living as a farmer, a miller, and possibly a little work as a blacksmith. While it was reported that neither he or Tamsey could read or write in 1860, his signature is found on Civil War payment receipts in 1862 (see next paragraph) and by 1900, he and Tamsey were both reported as having the capacity for at least these two of the "three 'R's.'"[10] Between 1860 and 1870, the value of William’s real estate grew from $200 to $800 and the value of his personal estate expanded from $150 to $320[11,12].
According to the National Cemetery Administration's recording of his gravesite, William Cassady was a Private in the Confederate States Army.[13] In a search for his military service record, the nearest match for confederate service is for a William H. Cassady, who enlisted at Prestonsburg in Floyd County, Kentucky, as a private and was discharged as a corporal. On 25 October 1861, this William was sworn in as a soldier in the 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Confederate) Regiment for a period of twelve months.[14] His service record includes payment for (a) “driving team on extra duty from the 28th day of January to the 28th day of February 1862 at a rate of twenty-five cents per day” for a total of $7.50 and (b) for extra duty as blacksmith from 1-30 November 1862 at a rate of forty cents per day for a total of $11.60. Both receipts for payment were signed by William H. Cassity [Cassady] at Camp Bowen, Tazewell County, Virginia. No record has been found of any application for a pension by William or by Tamsey after his death. Today, Camp Bowen is better known as Maiden Spring Farm, originally owned by the Rees Bowen family. Maiden Spring Farm is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located just northwest of the junction of Virginia State Route 91 and Virginia State Route 609; it lies near the headwaters of the Clinch River. This farm, aka fort, also has a rich history for its significance in Lord Dunsmore’s War. More can be read about the history of Maiden Spring Farm (aka Fort Bowen)[15] on Virginia's nomination for its addition on the National Historic Register in 1994. Virginia also emplaced a historical marker at Maiden Spring.[16]
Education and self-improvement seemed important to William and Tamsey as their children did well in their future endeavors. We will explore each of their children’s lives in future articles.
